What You Need For MiraLAX Colonoscopy Preparation:

NOTE: Everything is available over the counter – no prescription required

  • Two Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5 mg tablets, (make sure not to confuse with Dulcolax Stool Softener).

  • 64 ounces of clear liquid (NO RED / BLUE / PURPLE DYES)

  • 1 MiraLAX bottle, 8.3 ounces.

  • Four Simethicone (GAS-X) 125-250mg chewable tablets

Two Weeks Before Your Colonoscopy:

  • Check with your pharmacy to make sure your medication is available.

  • It is a good idea to discuss with your primary care physician important aspects of your medical plan including:

    • If you are taking blood thinners, talk about whether you are able to stop them around the time of the procedure, and whether you need to be on other medications during that time.

    • Talk about any medical condition that you may have that can change our plan the day of the procedure, including implanted devices such as heart devices, insulin pumps for diabetes or any other concern.

    • Make sure that any new symptoms are evaluated, especially before non-urgent procedures.

Five Days Before Your Colonoscopy:

  • Start a low residue diet, if you need further information please refer to our patient resource section at www.advanceddigest.com.

  • Stop iron, including multivitamin pills that contain iron.

  • Make sure all your plans are ready for the endoscopy day, including arranging a ride home with a friend or family member.

  • Have plenty of clear liquids available at home! You need to be on a CLEAR LIQUID DIET the day before your procedure.

One Day Before Your Colonoscopy:

  • Drink only clear liquids all day, no red/dyed liquids. Do not eat solid foods or milk/dairy products.

  • All the meals, including breakfast, will have to be from a clear liquid diet

  • In the morning, Mix 64 ounces of liquid with 8.3 ounces MiraLAX and place in the refrigerator (do not add ice). This will make it easier to drink later in the day.

  • At 12 noon, take 2 Dulcolax tablets and 2 Simethicone (Gas-X) tablets.

  • At 5 PM on the day before your procedure, drink the MiraLAX mixture as follows, consuming 8 ounces every 15 minutes for one hour.

    • At 5:00 p.m drink 1 (8-ounce) glass of the mixture.

    • At 5:15 p.m drink 1 (8-ounce) glass of the mixture.

    • At 5:30 p.m drink 1 (8-ounce) glass of the mixture.

    • At 5:45 p.m drink 1 (8-ounce) glass of the mixture.

  • When you’re finished, half of the MiraLAX mixture will be left. Save the rest of it in the refrigerator for the second half of your preparation.

  • You will have many bowel movements so be prepared. Soft and moisturized wipes can be helpful.

If you were told to arrive for your procedure BEFORE 11:59 AM, start drinking the second half of the MiraLAX mixture at 12 AM (Midnight):

Things to know:

  • You may continue to drink clear liquids for up to 4 hours before arriving at the planned location.

  • Arrive at the time recommended by the endoscopy center. You have to be with an adult who will accompany you home. No Uber, taxi, or public transportation is permitted – it must be a trusted person you know.

  • Bring all your medical equipment that you need with you to the procedure, especially your CPAP machine if you have sleep apnea.

  • Vomiting can happen, especially if you are drinking the prep too fast. If you have an episode of vomiting, stop drinking the preparation and attempt to resume in 30 minutes to an hour. If symptoms persist, seek immediate medical attention.

  • Sometimes bowel movements can be delayed – if you did not have adequate bowel movements immediately, without abdominal pain or any other symptoms, you can continue with the preparation. However, if you start having abdominal pain, significant bloating, nausea and vomiting, seek immediate medical attention.
